According to the American Diabetes Association:
- Nearly 34 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
- Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
- The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion. Learn more at American Diabetes Association.
Ohioans are increasingly feeling the effects of diabetes as thousands of people suffer from the disease, and many others may have diabetes and do not know it! The Ohio Department of Health estimates that 10.1 percent of Ohio adults have been diagnosed with diabetes - more than 895,000 people.
DINING WITH DIABETES
Dining with Diabetes is a cooking school and nutrition education program designed for people with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. In a series of four classes, cooking demonstrations will help you learn healthy techniques to use in your own kitchen. The program includes sampling healthy foods and discussion with a dietitian or certified diabetes educator, plus a follow-up reunion class held at a later date. DINING WITH DIABETES: ONLINE
Dining with Diabetes: Beyond the Kitchen is a FREE online course created by OSU Extension Family and Consumer Sciences. This online course goes “beyond the kitchen” to discuss making healthy choices when eating at restaurants, grocery shopping or planning weekly meals. Click here for more information.
TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR DIABETES
This is a one-hour class on diabetes management held at various locations throughout Licking County. Participants will learn about the signs of diabetes, possible complications, and ways to manage the condition, including simple steps to control portions and the importance of getting regular exercise. The presentation will also include a cooking demonstration featuring healthy food items to sample. Please call to schedule a class.
